THE CHAIRS
5/06/2010 - 4/07/2010
Roundhouse Theatre -
Eugene Ionesco's absurdist masterpiece -
The Chairs - is a brilliant balance of the intimate and the epic, has a cast of hundreds (OK, most of them are invisible), is highly physical (think Marx Brothers frenzy), and its climax is one of the greatest in modern theatre. In
Martin Crimp's sparkling translation it's sharper and shinier than ever.
This is a diamond of comic and theatrical invention.
Poppet and Petty-Pie have been married for centuries, or maybe only 70 years. They live in a house surrounded by water and pass the time with private games and half-remembered stories. Tonight they are prearing for a great party, at which the Orator will deliever the ultimate message: the meaning of life. As guest after guest arrives, the chairs pile up and everything is in expectation.
